Green Computing
UMF has been recognized nationally for its commitment to green computing. We were the first university in Maine and one of the first in the nation to join Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a nonprofit environmental group founded by Google, Microsoft, Intel, Dell, and other major technology companies.
In 2009, we won the Power Down for the Planet contest, a nationwide competition that Climate Savers Computing sponsored to see which college/university could get the highest percentage of staff and students to commit to use power management on their computers. You can read more about this achievement in an article we published in the journal Educause Quarterly.
As part of our green commitment, ITS provides power saving support to all users on campus. With a few simple changes in computer settings and usage, we can significantly reduce the amount of power that we consume. To find out what you can do, follow these simple recommendations.
While you’re doing that, ITS staff are working toward the same goals on a campus-wide basis. We have already implemented several cost-effective conservation policies and are investigating others.
